She also was a part of the orchestra at school, playing cellist. Jones was a college student when she went to college, was recognized as one of best hurdlers. She was the winner of the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA Track & Field Championship. Jones was also part of the second-placed team in the 100-meter relay. Jones is the NCAA champion in indoor hurdles in both 2003 and 2014. Jones has been training since 2005 when she graduated from her education. Jones won Torino Memorial in 2005, as well as Ostrava and Heusden races the following year.

Brandt was raised and born in Cape Town in South African. She emigrated from Cape Town to Auckland New Zealand with her family during her late teens. Brandt was spotted locally by casting directors.
